YouthLearn

This website is fantastic! It provides easy-to-read, user-friendly theory and tips about inquiry-based learning. You'll be happy to know that it's not a spanking new thing that needs a whole new way of doing things but, rather, goes back to education philosopher, John Dewey. It challenges an information-focued learning model and inspires a transformation-focused model in its place.

The Empowerment Spiral

By teaching media literacy,we empower our students to make informed decisions and use these skills (Awareness, analysis, reflection, action) in all aspects of their lives. One of the main purposes of the Empowerment Spiral is to move students towards ACTION and ADVOCACY. With this type of awareness as a foundation, students will be able to identify some causes and may pusue solutions to social justice issues(making the personal political). That is, after analyzing a web-based media construction (for exgample, Martin Luther King.org) students may be moved to act on behalf of equity and work towards the eradication of racism in our time, however big or small this work may be.

Day 1

Hi there,
Today was inspiring! Thank you for your questions, your insights, your stories and your energy! You epitomize the life-long learner and it is a privilege to work with you.

It's a long time before December 3rd when we meet again for Session 2. And, we feel it is definitely worthwhile to continue our professional dialogue. So, I invite you to do so by responding to this Critical Literacy learning strategy for making meaning. It's called One Question, One Connection, One Observation and One Surprise. Reflect on today's activities and discussions then please post your response.

I look forward to your responses
